PS. You can now have your hot drinks with Rude Health Oat Milk.

How to increase your vegetable & fruit intake

Winter is here & it’s time to increase that vegetable & fruit intake more than ever to ensure that your immune system is strong & healthy to fight off any infections. We know that some people may find it a little more challenging to get the right amount of veggies in, whether it’s kids, adults or the elderly- age doesn’t matter. It is important to make sure you get in the right amount of mother nature’s medicine (vegetables & fruits) so that your body can function at its optimal levels!

Bountiful vegetable & ingredient image - Vegetable intake

#FreshTip – Remember to store your vegetables correctly to ensure that you reap the full benefits of it when consuming & to ensure that it stays fresher for longer!

Here’s how you can increase your veggie intake on a regular basis:

  1. Top favourite – Add vegetables to your smoothies or juices

This is a great way to get all those nutrients you need in a delicious morning smoothie or post-workout snack, the options are endless. Trusty old Kale, a great superfood that is dense in nutrients is a great addition to any smoothie. Other great options are spinach, carrot, celery, beetroot, cucumber and so the list never ends.

Kale in strainer - Vegetable intake

We’ve made this simple for you – the Pick n Pay powered by Kauai Frozen smoothie range has all the goodness & nutrients packed into a box. Add some extra Kale or beetroot here or there & some liquid and you’re good to go!

Available now on Mr D Food & Uber Eats* on the Kauai Real Food Market in Cape Town & Benmore, Gauteng.

Pick n Pay Powered by Kauai Frozen Smoothie range

  1. Add some more vegetables & fruit to your salads

How to become bomb at working from home!

Working from home getting to you? Don’t worry, we’re all feeling it. Working from home can be the best way to be super productive & get the most done if you work smart. We figured that if we were to work more effectively & efficiently we just need to strike that perfect balance of work & life at home.

Tips for the #workingfromhome club:

  1. Get organised & assign a dedicated work space

Working from home doesn’t mean that you can’t have your own little work space if possible. Try your best to create a well-lit, organised & quiet space for you to work during office hours. Try your best not to work on a couch or bed, try to separate your work and chill areas if you can.

Working from home- Desk with keyboard, mouse, phone stand & desktop

  1. Take your meeting outside

If you do not need your laptop & desk why not take a walk in the garden (if you have one) or sit on the balcony while on the call. Whether you have earphones in or a Bluetooth headset, change your scenery a bit to keep your mind stimulated & awake.

  1. Meal & snack prep as per usual

It is important to plan your meals & snacks as you normally would when you are at the office. It saves time & ensures that you are staying on track with your healthy eating and goals. Make sure the food & snacks you are eating are healthy & contain the right nutrients.

Kauai Real Food Market
We’re bringing your favourite Kauai retail products & ingredients to your door, to help you stay healthy & stay at home during the lockdown & beyond. You can now order selected Kauai products on Mr D Food & Uber Eats, with the option of contactless delivery.

  1. Use your commuting time to do something you usually wouldn’t have time for or exercise

We all know that commuting can take a large chunk of our time, so use this time to either  do something for you or get some good exercise in. Create a daily ritual or routine in the mornings & afternoons to allow yourself to get ready for the day ahead & detach yourself from work at the end. This is a great way to separate work & home life on a daily basis.

We’ve got some home workouts from the Kauai Fam themselves for you to try out. Click here for some fitness inspo!

  1. Remember to take your breaks

Working from home can sometimes make us forget to take the necessary breaks we need. So set a reminder or specific time out of the day to take your break – regain your energy with food or snacks, step away from your laptop, interact with those in your house & get a breath of fresh air. Try to spend your break somewhere else in your home and not at your work space.

  1. Plan your days wisely

Write out a list of daily or weekly goals that you need to achieve & tick them off as you complete a task. Plan out your workload & jot down deadlines to make sure you are aware of them. It’s important to know that these goals/tasks can change & that’s okay. Try to relook at what needs to be done and get back in focus.

  1. Stay connected with your colleagues

If you work with a team, try your best to check in regularly with them like you normally would at the office. See if they are coping & provide assistance and support where you can. Keep your supervisor updated with your daily/weekly agenda, it will help in planning & them giving assistance where they can. It is a good idea to set up regular check-ins via phone, or video conferencing to make sure you’re getting to everything but also just as a reminder that WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!

Boost your health with good sleep

Already doing as much as you can when it comes to antioxidants, superfoods, vitamins etc.? Great, you’re right on track to becoming or staying healthy, fit and strong. But what about sleep?

Sleep has a huge, and very beneficial impact on our overall health. Just as a routine in terms of eating healthy foods and exercising well has a positive effect on your health, energy levels and weight, so does a good quality and quantity of sleep.

Alarm clock on desk in the morning to wake up from sleep

Image: Unsplash

How can you make sure you get some good shut eye?

  • Try to sleep between 7 and 8 hours a night
  • If you can, try to go to sleep and wake up at roughly the same times
  • Keep your room dark, cool and well ventilated
  • Switch off the TV, laptops, tablets etc. at least an hour before going to bed
  • Try not to eat a heavy meal before going to sleep – indigestion can keep you awake and feeling uncomfortable
  • Ditch high-sugar drinks before going to bed. Better yet, cut them out completely or keep them to a minimum in your diet as they give you a whole lot of calories but very little else
  • Drinking warm milk? The jury is out on that one. But if it makes you feel cozy and sleepy, by all means do it!
  • Exercise and healthier eating habits go hand in hand with better sleep so make sure you focus on those as well
  • Turn on night mode on your cell phones or laptops when it gets dark, it reduces your exposure to blue light which affects your quality of sleep.

We all know that binge watching YouTube videos or Netflix or scrolling through hours and hours of Instagram might be a usual routine for most of us. Remember that for you to feel good & energised the next day your body needs to recover through good sleep. So find that good balance & give your body the rest it needs to be at its optimal wellness & function for you to achieve those goals!

Super Superfood: Kale

Super superfood: Kale | %%sitename%% | Strenghten your immune system

Strengthen your immune system with one of our all time super superfoods: Kale.

Kale has lived up to its title of being a superfood and has made its way into many kitchens and menus around the world (including Beyonce) for its immune boosting properties & is used as a staple in salads, vegetable dishes, curries and stews, smoothies and so much more. There are many different types from being green or purple to having smooth or curly leaves, this incredible superfood delivers on its numerous health benefits & nutrient density. Some hail this beautiful vegetable with its frilly leaves as one of the top foods to help prevent disease because of its alkalizing effect on the body.

WHAT MAKES KALE A SUPERFOOD?

Packed with a high amount of antioxidants, nutrients and great digestive support, the role this superfood has in delivering optimal wellness to those who eat it is undeniable.

#FreshFact kale is actually one of the world’s best sources of vitamin C. A cup of raw kale contains even more vitamin C than a whole orange. It contains 4.5 times the amount of vitamin C than spinach.

Super superfood: Kale | %%sitename%% | Strenghten your immune system

Kale has a top Aggregate Nutrient Density Index score of 1000 for its nutrient content per calorie – it contains:

  • Vitamin C which is great to strengthen your immune system & keep it healthy.
  • Calcium which is good for the bones.
  • Vitamin A as this is important for good eye health.
  • It also gives you carotenoids (lutein and zeaxanthin) and flavonoids which may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects

The list can go on and on but after all of that you should have a good understanding as to why it’s at the top of every nutritionist’s must-eat list.

Another #FreshFact: if you’re going to be eating kale raw it helps to “massage” it a little. Kale can be a little tough so working those greens with your hands a bit takes the edge off, and renders them tender enough to eat without cooking.

Here’s how you can include this super superfood in your daily diet:

  • Use kale in green juices
  • Make a green smoothie using banana, water, apple, kale and lemon juice. By using it in a smoothie you get the fibre content of kale as well
  • Use it in salads with some omega-filled seeds, nuts and avo
  • Make your own kale chips by baking the leaves in the oven with a little drizzle of olive oil – these are delicious when served with hummus.
  • Steam it until wilted and serve as your vegetable side for salmon, grilled chicken or poached eggs
  • Add a bit of colour to your vegetarian falafels by adding it to the mixture before cooking

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS:

For a bunch of whole leaves, it is important to avoid any moisture near Kale. Wrap the bunch of kale in a layer of paper towels, and store in a supermarket plastic bag or a zip lock plastic bag in the refrigerator drawer. It should be in great shape for a week. If you have the option, choose kale with small leaves – it will be tender.

We couldn’t be any more convinced about this incredible superfood that mother nature has blessed us with. So do yourself a favour and include it in your diet as much as you can, your body will thank you for it- let’s get our kale on!

Dark Chocolate Crunchy Protein Balls by The Healthy Process

We all know that snacking is our weak spot & it’s where we give into all our guilty pleasures. Whether it is those mid-morning nibbles or late night cravings, your snacks should  complement your daily healthy meals & satisfy those cravings while still being healthy. Kelly from The Healthy Process has the perfect recipe that makes healthy & delicious dark chocolate crunchy protein balls for any time of the day, not just snack time!

Dark chocolate covered crunchy protein balls with chocolate crunch in background

WHAT YOU NEED:

1 cup almond meal
30ml organic maple syrup
1 scoop Kauai protein powder (Kelly used the Kauai Vanilla Protein Powder)
1 tbsp coconut oil, melted
1/2 cup Kauai peanut butter
1/2 cup granola/ cacao nibs
4 squares dark chocolate

Kauai Protein Powders in all different flavours

Kauai Real Peanut Butter Glass jar with label

Kauai Real Almond & Macadamia Butter Glass jar with label

METHOD:

  1. Combine all ingredients (except the dark chocolate) into a food processor and blend till it’s all combined and creates a crumbling texture (you want to be able to squeeze the mixture in your hands and for it to stick together. If you need a stickier texture, add some more peanut butter or just a tablespoon or 2 of warm water).
  2. Roll mixture into balls, roughly a tablespoon size per ball and set aside on a tray or plate lined with baking paper.
  3. Break up the chocolate into a small glass bowl.
  4. Using a small saucepan bring some water to the boil, enough to cover half the glass bowl with the chocolate in.
  5. Put the bowl into the water and stir till all the chocolate has melted.
  6. Take a protein ball and dip half of it into the melted chocolate and place it back onto the baking paper.
  7. Repeat till you have half coated all the balls.
  8. Put the tray/plate into the fridge to set for 20-30 minutes.
  9. Enjoy and store in the fridge for up to 7 days or freeze them for up to 2 months.

NOTES:

* Not all Peanut Butter has the same textures which can change the consistency of the mixture. Try to use one that isn’t too hard.

* Makes up to 12-16 balls.

Now that’s how you  do snack o’clock! We are absolutely loving all these recipe & Kelly has a lot more healthy recipes for you to try out on her Instagram page, check it out @thehealthyprocess

HOW TO MAINTAIN GOOD MENTAL HEALTH

We know that being stuck at home during lockdown can make us all a little stressed or anxious, however it is important to look after yourself & your family that includes their mental, physical and emotional health. We’ve got some tips for you to ensure that both you and the family is on top of your mental health!

GO ON AN INFORMATION DIET

Take a break from watching, reading, or listening to the news stories, including social media. Give yourself a break & go outside or into a different space to get a breath of fresh air. Changing your scenery helps to give your mind that mental break .

Mental Health Tip Information Diet

PLACE OF WORK & REST SHOULD NOT BE THE SAME

Separate your work space from your resting or chilling space as this allows for your brain to distinguish from the two. This becomes important when it is time to rest. Your mind knows that it can remove itself from the space of work or stress and relax. The same goes for your working space, if you are constantly in a space where you are resting your brain will not know that it is time to work & focus but you will tend to be a lot more relaxed. So please, don’t work in your bed, that’s your resting space.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

Now’s the time to learn the things you’ve always wanted to do.  Pick up a paintbrush, get baking, try your first yoga pose or finish a puzzle. Do that thing you’ve always wanted to do but never had the chance or time to do it. Remember to include those in the house or family too, it might be a fun new task for everyone to get involved in.

Mental Health Books illustration

TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY

Taking care of yourself and your well being is very important during this time. Whether it’s running up and down your balcony or backyard or doing a yoga session – keep moving! Or even if that means having self-care Sunday’s with your favourite face mask, take care of yourselves fam!

Barbell illustration

STAY CONNECTED!

Make it part of your daily routine to reach out to friends and family. Give them a call, send them a message or video call friends and family. These emotional and meaningful experiences reduce stress & raise those feel-good hormones.

Mental Health Tip Phone illustration

KEEP BUSY

Try to get creative with activities that you can do at home. Check our Kauai’s channel for some inspiration. Do activities that you enjoy & give your body that boost and change of scenery it needs. Bring out your inner child & get creative!

FINALLY…

Always keep an eye out for exciting things on our Instagram & Facebook page as we are staying safe, staying positive & staying healthy TOGETHER with you, the Kauai Fam!

YOU’VE GUT THIS

With the COVID-19 situation evolving every day, keeping your immunity up should be a top priority—and it starts with your gut, where 70% of your immune system resides. We’ve gut some gut health tips for you to follow.

By now, many people are very much aware of the importance of a healthy gut. It is very clear that a healthy belly equals a healthy body.  Your gut houses a community of billions of different bacteria (probiotics) that work to make you healthier. Each kind does a different job and prefers certain foods to others. You need different types of bacteria to keep your gut in balance; more diversity in the bacteria is associated with better health. Try to include these ingredients in your daily meals to feed your gut and to make sure it is healthy and happy!

Yoghurt

Yoghurt serves as an excellent source of good bacteria also known as probiotics, the right kind of yoghurt, not the sugar filled flavoured yoghurt but rather sugar-free full-fat version. Add some yoghurt to a frozen smoothie pack from the PnP powered by Kauai range

Eat Lots of Vegetables, Legumes & Beans

Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of nutrients for a healthy microbiota. As they are high in fibre, the body needs bacteria to break the fibre down which helps stimulate the growth of bacteria in your gut. Sources of fibre that is good for your gut: beans, legumes, broccoli, chickpeas, lentils & whole grains.

 Sourdough

Sourdough is made by fermenting the dough, it is a lot more digestible than regular bread and it releases energy a lot slower. The process of fermentation usually involves bacteria or yeast when converting the sugars into food(bread). Learn more about the SCHOON sourdough we serve here. PS. SCHOON is available at selected Checkers stores.

 Almonds

Almonds are known to have good probiotic properties. They are high in fibre & loaded with fatty acids & polyphenols which is the ultimate treat for your gut. Feeling a little peckish during the day or need a good pick me up snack, grab a handful of almonds. Or sprinkle roasted almonds over the Moroccan Chicken and chick Pea bowl on our PnP Powered by Kauai range.

Gut Health Tip - Almonds

 Ginger

Fresh ginger may assist in the production of stomach acid that also helps in stimulating the digestive system to keep moving food through the gut.  Adding ginger to your daily meals and drinks is very easy, whether you put some in soups, stews or smoothies or fresh ginger tea (hot water poured over grated ginger).

Gut Health tip - Ginger root

Try out some of these tips & ingredients in your daily meals and thank us later! Remember a healthy happy gut equals a healthy body and you, you’ve gut this!

WE’RE IN THIS TOGETHER

We're in this together | Lockdown

Hi Kauai fam,

We will be closing our stores during lockdown. Our Virgin Active stores closed yesterday, and our retail stores will close at end of day today. We have spent the last few days trying to find creative ways to keep serving you our healthy, immune-boosting food & drinks, but it has become clear that the right and responsible thing to do is to close our doors for now, along with the rest of South Africa. We stand with SA and with President Cyril Ramaphosa in supporting the national lockdown, as we believe that it will help halt the spread of COVID-19, which will keep our staff, customers and country safe.

Thank-you to our amazing Kauai staff who have worked hard to help SA eat healthy over the past weeks. We are working with them to ensure that they stay safe and have access to funding during the lockdown.

We will not be offering delivery through UberEats & Mr D Food during this time – but you can still find Kauai’s protein bars, protein powders & sparkling sodas in selected Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar and FreshStop at Caltex stores. Our Pick n Pay Powered by Kauai make-at-home smoothies and ready-to-eat healthy frozen meals are also available at selected Pick n Pay stores and are a convenient way to continue eating healthy nutritious food during the lockdown.

We look forward to re-opening our stores and continuing to help South Africans eat healthy, once the situation returns to normal. These are tough times, but we will get through them together.

Be safe,

Dean

We’re taking all the necessary steps to make sure we keep our customers and staff healthy. You can read our COVID-19 policy  that we practice throughout the business here.

Coming soon… Winter’s almost here!

Honest, responsibly sourced and innovative ingredients always!

Put them together in delicious ways, and we’ve got a menu (and you, a lunch order) as FRESH as it gets. Often this means letting the seasons and seasonal produce guide us when we decide what to put on our menu. Twice a year (summer and winter), we launch seasonal menus that not only brings the winter feels but tons of nutrients to keep you going & super healthy during the colder days.

This comes with a lot of hard work from our NPD & Innovation team. For about 6 months, they are tasting and testing the next best ingredients and deciding if they’re good enough for the Kauai menu. After that they put their chefs hats on and start working their magic (It’s actual magic).

For the launch of our winter menu, we are preparing for colder days with new functional ingredients, exciting new flavours, warm dishes, super superfoods to give you that boost and a new addition to our coffee family.

We are serving up Mexican inspired dishes loaded with antioxidants (vitamin K,C & E), healthy fats (omega 3 fatty acids) & fibre. Some hearty goodness is just what everyone needs on a chilly day, so be sure to try out our nutrient-packed warm veg stews & flavourful dishes guaranteed to keep you warm & your immune system strong.

We all want that winter glow, so keep an eye out for some new functional shots making its debut this winter. Whether it’s that beautiful glow you’re seeking or to keep your guts going, our shots are calling the shots!

We know it’s not easy getting out of bed in the morning but if you’re coffee fanatics like us, a new addition to our coffee family will sure help you get through the day. No matter what your dietary requirements are, the new products are coming to the party. If not, remember you can customise your meal and make it your own – it’s safe to say that we’ve got you covered this winter. Keep an eye out for our new menu launching in April, it will definitely give you the chills!

Just a disclaimer fam…

WHAT ARE HEMP SEEDS?

These tiny seeds come from the high-growing varieties of the Cannabis plant, but don’t be alarmed, they don’t contain the active THC compound found in marijuana! They are rich in nutrients , they’re versatile & one of many great SUPERFOODS too.

WHAT MAKES THEM A SUPERFOOD:

  • Packed with protein that has a wide range of amino acids – aids feelings of satiety and provides the building blocks for muscles. Because they contain all the amino acids, they are a great source of protein for vegans and vegetarians.
  • Loaded with Magnesium which is linked to a positive effect on migraines, blood pressure, osteoporosis and PMS.
  • Rich in vitamins E (a natural antioxidant) and B (important for cellular metabolism), calcium, magnesium, iron(which helps fight fatigue & keep the immune system strong), and zinc.
  • Filled with fibre which has been linked to feelings of satiety and a healthy digestive system.
  • Omega fatty acids in the optimal ratio of omega 3 and omega 6 (the only plant source along with chia seeds that have this combination).

HEMP SEED TIPS & TRICKS

  • Boost your smoothie, ask the cashier to add some hemp seeds to your smoothie.
  • Ask for extra hemp seeds when you order a breakfast bowl and sprinkle it over your bowl.
  • Using them at home? To keep them fresh, buy small quantities and store them in an airtight container in the fridge.
  • Add them to seeds bars, nut bars or trail mixes.
  • Mix into cooked and cooled quinoa or couscous.
  • Add to juices or smoothies.
  • Use them to up the health factor on a treat. Try dipping apple slices into dark, raw chocolate and then into a mixture of calcium-containing almond nibbles, hemp seeds and chia seeds. Allow to cool in the fridge until the chocolate has set.

Immune System Boosters

Feeding your body certain foods may help keep your immune system strong. If you’re looking for ways to prevent winter colds and the flu, your first step should be a visit to your local grocery store. Plan your meals to include these 15 powerful immune system boosters.

Citrus fruit
Citrus fruits (like oranges and lemons) are packed with vitamin C, the vitamin we all turn to when we’ve caught a cold. That’s because it helps build up your immune system. Vitamin C is thought to increase the production of white blood cells. These are key to fighting infections. Because your body doesn’t produce or store it, you need daily vitamin C for continued health. Almost all citrus fruits are high in vitamin C and we’ve got  A LOT of smoothies and shots to choose from.

There’s also some orange in the Plant Power salad and wrap for some sneaky Vitamin C!

Red bell peppers

If you think citrus fruits have the most vitamin C of any fruit or vegetable, think again. Red peppers contain twice as much vitamin C as citrus fruits. Get your peppers in the Salsa Quesadilla and Cajun Chicken salad and wrap.

BRUP BRUP BRUP Broccoli

Broccoli is supercharged with vitamins and minerals. Packed with vitamins A, C, and E, X, Y, K, L, M, (kidding, let’s only say A, C, E for now) as well as many other antioxidants and fiber, broccoli is one of the healthiest vegetables you can put in your tummy. Thai Crunch please and thank you.

Spinach is cool

Spinach made the list not just because it’s rich in vitamin C. It’s also packed with numerous antioxidants! Similar to broccoli, spinach is healthiest when it’s cooked as little as possible so that it retains its nutrients hence the smoothies and juices, people. All the, all the, ALL THE GREENS & The Parmesan Greens!

YOLO, eat your yogurt

Yogurt has cultures that may stimulate your immune system to help fight diseases. Try to get eat plain yogurts rather than the kinds that are preflavored and loaded with sugar. You can sweeten plain yogurt yourself with healthy fruits and a drizzle of honey instead ie. the Breakfast Bowl and Tropical Yogurt Pot. Yogurt can also be a great source of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system and is thought to boost our body’s natural defenses against diseases.

All the Almonds please

When it comes to preventing and fighting off colds, vitamin E tends to take a backseat to vitamin C. However, vitamin E is key to a healthy immune system. It’s a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it requires the presence of fat to be absorbed properly. Nuts, such as almonds, are packed with the vitamin and also have healthy fats. A half-cup serving, which is about 46 whole, shelled almonds, provides nearly 100 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin E.

PS. The Almond Porridge Pot is still available, just ask the cashiers and our Power Oats is topped with almonds.

Chicken

Chicken is high in vitamin B-6. About 3 ounces of lean chicken meat contains 40 to 50 percent of your daily recommended amount of B-6.Vitamin B-6 is an important player in many of the chemical reactions that happen in the body. It’s also vital to the formation of new and healthy red blood cell.

Sunflower seeds & Turmeric

You may know turmeric as a key ingredient in many curries. But this bright yellow, bitter spice has also been used for years as an anti-inflammatory.

Sunflower seeds are full of nutrients, including magnesium, and vitamin B-6. They’re also incredibly high in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant.Vitamin E is important in regulating and maintaining immune system function. Other foods with high amounts of vitamin E include avocados (Avo toast foreva) and dark leafy greens (Juice, juice, juice).  Find turmeric and our curried sunflower seeds in the Butta Chicken Bowl and the sunflower seeds in our Plant Power salad and wrap.

More ways to prevent the flu

Variety is the key to proper nutrition. Eating just one of these foods won’t be enough to help fight off the flu, even if you eat it constantly. Pay attention to servings and recommended daily intake so that you don’t get too much of a single vitamin and too little of others.Eating right is a great start, and there are other things you can do to protect you and your family from the flu, cold, and other illnesses.

We found all these tips and facts on healthline.com one of our go-to sources when we’re not asking our nutritionist.

ANYTHING ELSE IS FOR THE BIRDS

No fishy feeds, antibiotics or cooped-up coops – only the best conditions for our chickens. Kauai stores serve chicken and eggs that are farmed free range and feather-friendly.

What is free range?

Free range means that the chickens roam freely without any constraints and are fed an organic, all-vegetarian diet that’s free of antibiotics and pesticides. Free range farms provide facilities where the chickens are able to live as naturally as possible and are able to go outside when they want throughout their laying cycle. The chickens have access to scratching areas, perches, litter and nests.

Why free range is better!

Free range chickens are known for producing eggs that are more nutrient dense than those from caged chickens. Chickens that are free to roam around, have a more versatile selection of vitamins and minerals like Vitamins B, D, A, Potassium, and Sodium. Due to the better standard of living and better quality diets, the taste of free range chicken is generally better as their quality of life and diet is a lot higher.

Why we use free range

You can’t go wrong with farmers who do the right thing, so we pick our partners for sustainability, source ethically and go to great lengths to support local producers. Kauai stores serve chicken and eggs that are farmed free range and feather-friendly. We are trying to make real healthy food accessible at all times and having free range is part of the journey to get there. We believe in giving you the best while doing the best for the environment.

Prioritizing your health & safety in response to COVID-19

A message from our CEO

Prioritizing health & safety in response to COVID-19

In light of the recent news that COVID-19 has arrived in SA, we wanted to share what we are doing to prioritize the health and wellbeing of our Kauai family (customers & staff):

· We are upholding the strict hygiene protocols in our stores – all staff preparing food and drinks wear gloves at all times, and staff sanitise their hands every 30 minutes; all surfaces where food and drinks are prepared are also sanitised every 30 minutes.

· We will be introducing bottles of hand sanitiser at our Kauai counters over the coming weeks. We encourage customers to sanitise their hands if they are handling cash, and before they eat.

· As a temporary measure, we are pausing the use of reusable cups in our stores. We will continue to honour the R1 discount for anyone who brings in a reusable cup (although we won’t make drinks in the cups), and will continue to run our current reusable cup promotion (buy a reusable cup and get 3 free smoothies / coffees; the free smoothies / coffees will be served in take-away or eat-in cups). Although we are currently focused on the health of our customers and staff, we are also committed to the health of our planet, and will review this on a weekly basis; we hope to reinstate the use of reusable cups as soon as possible. In the meantime, we will continue to use our smoothie cups made from 80% recycled plastic, and encourage our customers to recycle them where possible.

Health and well-being are at the heart of who we are as Kauai, and we remain committed to keeping our Kauai family safe and healthy during this challenging situation.

Here’s what you can do to take care of your health and protect others…

Wash your hands frequently.

Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Why? Your constantly touching many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, your hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue straight away.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, go see your doctor.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

We found these and more useful tips on the World Health Organisations website.

HEALTHY BODIES NEED A HEALTHY PLANET

Living a healthy lifestyle does not only include the way we look after ourselves, the food we eat and the amount of kilometres we run but the way we look after our environment too. We try our best to be as sustainable as possible when it comes to sourcing, preparing and serving better choices to you guys. Living a healthy lifestyle that includes looking after the planet too, does not have to feel intimidating or impossible but smart sustainable thinking from us all.

Here’s what we’re doing (and will keep doing) to care for the planet…

Low Food Waste

By reducing our food wastage in stores we are also reducing our carbon footprint. Discarded food ends up in landfills and through decomposition produces large amounts of powerful greenhouse gasses. Too much greenhouse gasses can contribute to global warming and climate change. We ensure that we keep our food wastage to a minimum and our stores have an average food wastage of less than 1%.

Trying to do the same? The Pick n Pay powered by Kauai range  is perfectly portioned to prevent any food wastage and to allow for every last bit to be enjoyed.

Pnp Powered By Kauai Frozen Meal Range

Low Electricity Use

We use induction hobs when prepping your meals.  This is a more energy efficient way of cooking in comparison to traditional gas or electric hobs. The heat is in direct contact with the food which means less electricity needed to prepare meals.

Packaging

All of our take away packaging including hot drink cups, straws, bowls and cardboard boxes have been designed to be 100% recyclable. Our takeaway smoothie cups are made from 80% recycled plastics. It’s your turn to contribute to a healthier planet, dispose of your take away packaging responsibly into recycling bins.

We understand that it can get difficult trying to reduce your plastic consumption but we have made it a lot easier for you, the Kauai reusable smoothie and coffee cup helps you to reduce your plastic use and get R1 off* your smoothie or coffee. We know that straws play a major role in plastic waste, at Kauai we only make use of biodegradable and paper straws in our stores and we don’t serve our drinks with a straw. If you prefer using one, you can find one at the counter along with the coffee and smoothie cup lids.

Sustainable Packaging Kauai Smoothie cups

Responsible Sourcing

We go the extra mile so our ingredients won’t have to. You can’t go wrong with farmers who do the right thing, so we pick our partners for sustainability, source ethically and go to great lengths to support local producers. The food, the whole whole food and nothing but the food. All our fruit and veg is delivered whole, so every meal we make gets a farm-fresh start. Even our dressings are made from scratch.

Healthy Bodies needs a healthy planet - Vegetables

Free-Range Eggs & Chicken

All our chicken and eggs are free-range. Free-range means that the chickens roam freely without any constraints and are fed an organic, all-vegetarian diet that’s free of antibiotics and pesticides. The chickens are able to go outside whenever they want throughout their layering cycle. These farms must provide facilities where the chickens are able to live as naturally as possible, where they have access to scratching areas, perches, litter and nests, ultimately having a better quality of life. Happy chickens – better eggs!

IT’S TIME TO GIVE A LITTLE LOVE, BABEE

Bees are the backbone of the environment as we know it, helping many plant and animal species by pollinating almost all the plantbased things we eat. Unfortunately, as precious as the bees are to our ecosystem, there has been an increasing worry about the rate at which bees are dying and what it means for our future.

Here are 4 extremely easy things you can do to help protect the bees:

Bees are thirsty. Put a small basin of fresh water outside your home.

Bees work really hard to produce honey and it is our duty to ensure that they are well looked after. Place a small basin of fresh clean water outside your home to allow bees to rest and drink water – they’ll appreciate it. With all the hard work in the sun, bees get thirsty and need water to help them throughout the day.

Make your garden a bee-friendly space

If you’re a plant-parent, add non-hybrid, fruit, vegetable or herb plants to your garden as this is another way to attract bees and to provide them with a source of nourishment.

Don’t fear bees, they do not want to harm you.

As much as we fear bees, they fear us too. Their only job is to forage pollen and nectar from flowers and to bring it back to the hive to bring food for themselves and the beehive. To ensure that they do not sting you in the process of it all always stay still and calm when they are near or on you, this way, they’ll be absolutely harmless.

Buy local, raw honey

The honey you buy directly affects the way honey is being sourced, it’s gives beekeepers an indication as to how the honey needs to be sourced and how bees need to be looked after. To ensure that the honey you and others eat are sourced sustainably, buy local, raw honey that is not treated with any chemicals or other harmful substances that will endanger both the bees and the honey itself.

Raw honey offers many health benefits and serves as a particularly healthy sugar alternative. To reap the benefits of one of mother nature’s wonders responsibly, ensure that you are buying local, real, raw honey that is sustainably sourced. The Kauai honey is sustainably sourced, 100% South African & 100& Honey, no nasty stuff.

‌We’re‌ ‌all‌ ‌about‌ ‌clean‌ ‌snacks‌ ‌with‌ ‌less‌ ‌ingredients‌ ‌that‌ ‌are‌ ‌more‌ ‌convenient.‌ ‌The‌ ‌snacking‌ ‌world‌ ‌is‌ ‌changing‌ ‌as‌ ‌the‌ ‌need‌ ‌for‌ ‌on-the-go‌ ‌FRESH‌ ‌ingredients‌ ‌are‌ ‌growing‌ ‌so‌ ‌that‌ ‌it‌ ‌can‌ ‌be‌ ‌easily‌ ‌devoured‌ ‌at‌ ‌any‌ ‌time.Our‌ ‌PnP‌ ‌X‌ ‌Kauai‌ ‌smoothie‌ ‌range‌ ‌is‌ ‌the‌ ‌perfect‌ ‌100%‌ ‌healthy‌ ‌and‌ ‌0%‌ ‌hassle‌ ‌on-the-go‌ ‌snack.‌ ‌The‌ ‌frozen‌ ‌smoothie‌ ‌mixes‌ ‌are‌ ‌packed‌ ‌with‌ ‌your‌ ‌favourite‌ ‌flavours,‌ ‌just‌ ‌toss‌ ‌it‌ ‌into‌ ‌a‌ ‌blender,‌ ‌add‌ ‌a‌ ‌liquid‌ ‌and‌ ‌enjoy.‌ ‌ ‌

Visit‌ ‌Pick‌ ‌‘n‌ ‌Pay‌ ‌stores‌ ‌now‌ ‌to‌ ‌get‌ ‌your‌ ‌hands‌ ‌on‌ ‌these‌ ‌delicious‌ ‌smoothies.‌ ‌ ‌

2. Future‌ ‌thinking‌ ‌farmers‌ ‌-‌ ‌#RegenerativeAgriculture‌ ‌

Farmers‌ ‌live‌ ‌off‌ ‌the‌ ‌planet‌ ‌and‌ ‌some‌ ‌of‌ ‌them‌ ‌are‌ ‌working‌ ‌really‌ ‌hard‌ ‌behind‌ ‌the‌ ‌scenes‌ ‌to‌ ‌restore‌ ‌and‌ ‌nurture‌ ‌damaged‌ ‌soil.‌ ‌This‌ ‌also‌ ‌means‌ ‌ingredients‌ ‌that‌ ‌are‌ ‌better‌ ‌for‌ ‌you‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌ ‌environment.‌ ‌These‌ ‌are‌ ‌our‌ ‌kind‌ ‌of‌ ‌farmers‌  ‌(obviously!)‌. ‌We‌ ‌believe‌ ‌in‌ ‌using‌ ‌the‌ ‌very‌ ‌best‌ ‌ingredients‌ ‌that‌ ‌are‌ ‌sourced‌ ‌sustainably,‌ ‌that’s‌ ‌why‌ ‌we‌ ‌recently‌ ‌introduced‌ ‌Schoon‌ ‌bread‌ ‌in‌ ‌our‌ ‌stores.‌ ‌Made‌ ‌from‌ ‌100%‌ ‌South‌ ‌African‌ ‌grain‌ ‌that’s‌ ‌farmed‌ ‌sustainably‌ ‌with‌ ‌biodynamic‌ ‌methods.‌ ‌Learn more about how we source and select our ingredients and suppliers.

3. Spread‌ ‌the‌ ‌love‌ ‌

Spreads‌ ‌and‌ ‌butters‌ ‌are‌ ‌here‌ ‌to‌ ‌stay.‌ ‌We’ve‌ ‌introduced‌ ‌a‌ ‌range‌ ‌of‌ ‌spreads‌ ‌that‌ ‌will‌ ‌not‌ ‌only‌ ‌be‌ ‌loved‌ ‌as‌ ‌a‌ ‌spread‌ ‌but‌ ‌will‌ ‌be‌ ‌a‌ ‌great‌ ‌addition‌ ‌to‌ ‌smoothies‌ ‌or‌ ‌even‌ ‌a‌ ‌salad‌ ‌as‌ ‌a‌ ‌drizzle.‌ ‌The‌ ‌spreads‌ ‌are‌ ‌made‌ ‌with‌ ‌minimal‌ ‌ingredients‌ ‌with‌ ‌the‌ ‌main‌ ‌feature‌ ‌being‌ ‌the‌ ‌nuts‌ ‌of‌ ‌course.‌ ‌Our‌ ‌honey‌ ‌is‌ ‌100%‌ ‌local‌ ‌and‌ ‌is‌ ‌made‌ ‌using‌ ‌responsible‌ ‌practices‌ ‌that‌ ‌respect‌ ‌the‌ ‌environment.‌  ‌It’s‌ ‌free‌ ‌from‌ ‌flavourants‌ ‌and‌ ‌is‌ ‌sustainably‌ ‌sourced‌ ‌from‌ ‌African‌ ‌honey‌ ‌bees.‌ ‌ ‌

4. Life is better with bubbles

Consumers‌ ‌are‌ ‌concerned‌ ‌about‌ ‌sugar‌ ‌more‌ ‌than‌ ‌ever‌ ‌but‌ ‌the‌ ‌craving‌ ‌for‌ ‌a‌ ‌carbonated‌ ‌something‌ ‌has‌ ‌not‌ ‌gone‌ ‌away‌ ‌with‌ ‌it.‌ ‌We‌ ‌listened‌ ‌and‌ ‌have‌ ‌introduced‌ ‌our‌ ‌new‌ ‌flavour-forward‌ ‌sparkling‌ ‌sodas.‌ ‌Our‌ ‌three‌ ‌flavours,‌ ‌mango‌ ‌passion,‌ ‌tangerine‌ ‌and‌ ‌litchi‌ ‌are‌ ‌not-too-sweet‌ ‌and‌ ‌is‌ ‌the‌ ‌perfect‌ ‌on-the-go‌ ‌refresher.‌ ‌It’s‌ ‌free‌ ‌from‌ ‌kilojoules,‌ ‌preservatives,‌ ‌sugar,‌ ‌sweeteners‌ ‌and‌ ‌guilt.‌ ‌Each‌ ‌flavour‌ ‌comes‌ ‌in‌ ‌a‌ ‌beautifully‌ ‌designed,‌ ‌colourful‌ ‌can‌ ‌to‌ ‌make‌ ‌for‌ ‌the‌ ‌perfect‌ ‌Instagram‌ ‌cameo.‌ ‌

GPP X KAUAI PHOTOWALK

We have partnered with Gesant Abed, Cape Town based photographer/ traveler/ urban explorer, to roam the vibrant streets of the Mother city alongside other enthusiasts to enjoy a day in the sun and capture the very best of what this beautiful city has to offer.

“Photowalks are there to allow your creative juices to flow, in a safe environment with like minded people”- GPP, Gesant Abed

The collaboration was a great fit for both Kauai and G Portrait Project (GPP). We brought some bubbles to the streets of Cape Town with our guilt-free sparkling sodas. Not only were the beautiful streets captured but our beautifully designed and colourful cans were featured too, we don’t know what could make these pictures any better.

Our sparkling sodas are free from preservatives, sugars and sweeteners. All three variants are flavoured with not-too-sweet, fruity touches balanced with crisp bubbles. Our thirst-quenching sparkling sodas comes in three great flavours, litchi, mango passion and tangerine.

TRAIL TO TRUCK

The Kauai Fresh truck made another appearance on a hot Sunday morning where we combined mankind’s favourite thing-free stuff with our refreshing smoothies. Our team gave hikers, trailers, cyclists, bikers and dog walkers a refreshing smoothie to end off what seemed to be a good Sunday morning sweat session. Many passersby couldn’t believe that we were handing out free smoothies. However, our sole purpose was to give them a taste of summer, a refreshing drink to end off a great morning in mother nature. We trailed to different locations to make sure that the goodness was spread all over. If you’ve missed us, don’t shed a tear, we will be making another appearance soon, we’ve got all summer long.

Keep on trailing, we will see you soon!

RISE LIKE BUBBLES

The women behind Rise Women, Rachel Kolisi and Tammy Rawstron, held an inspiring and uplifting event for women at the V&A Battery Park in the past month. The main goal is to inspire women through the sharing of experiences and stories and helping them overcome any obstacles they may face.

We believe in what RISE is about and that it’s important that we all support women who try to make a difference in this world. We partnered up with the duo and sponsored the event with welcome bubbles for the guests. All the lovely ladies were welcomed with our refreshing Kauai flavoured sparkling sodas that had just the right amount of bubbles and fruity flavour to start off the memorable day.

The new Kauai sparkling sodas are free from kilojoules, preservatives, sugar and sweeteners which serves as the perfect guilt-free, on-the-go drink with a beautifully designed, Instagrammable can. To get your hands on guilt-free bubbles, visit any selected Kauai stores and try out one of our three flavours – Litchi, Tangerine and Mango Passion!

MAKE A GOOD SUMMER GREAT WITH OUR REFRESHING NEW MENU!

WE’VE GOT ALL THE INGREDIENTS FOR YOUR BEST. SUMMER. EVER.

It takes a lot to get a spot on our menu. That’s why every new wrap, bowl, pot and smoothie you’ll meet at Kauai this Summer was picked, planned and perfected from the ground up to be nutritious, delicious, and as healthy for the planet as it is for you.

We lost sleep and drank lots of coffee rejecting recipes, then lost more sleep (was it the coffee?) and drank even more coffee (it’s organic!) until we found new ways to keep all the ingredients seasonal, sustainable and locally sourced.

THE CAJUN CREATION: CAJUN CHICKEN WRAP AND BOWL

All wrapped up: Cajun free-range chicken, roasted sweet potato, red cabbage, rosa tomatoes, carrot, red pepper, baby spinach, rocket, spring onion, creamy herb dressing

Ever Put A Mardi Gras In Your Mouth? We’re bringing a fiesta of flavours all the way from the melting pot of New Orleans. At the heart of the city’s Cajun cuisine, you’ll find roughly diced bell pepper, onion, and celery. Known by the locals as the “Holy Trinity” of the culinary culture, these abundant veggies are prepared using salt blended into a mix of spices – usually garlic and cayenne pepper – but as any Louisiana local will tell you, the secret’s in the seasoning.

Bowled or wrapped, our new Cajun spiced free-range chicken adds a tasty touch a Southern heat to a mix of crisp veggies, roasted sweet potato and a splash of creamy herb dressing.

Sun Salutation with Spice:  Say hi this Summer with “Laissez les bon temp rouler!” (“lay-ZEH leh BAWN taw ROO-leh!”) – it’s Cajun for “Let the good times roll!”

CHILL OUT WITH CHIA: TROPICAL CHIA SMOOTHIE & POT

What’s inside: Mango, strawberries, Dragon Fruit, orange juice, pressed apple juice, coconut Chia pudding

Dynamite comes in small packages – just ask the Chia seed. Calorie for calorie, this tiny wonder is one of nature’s best sources of nutrients. Besides zinc, vitamin B3 (niacin), potassium, vitamin B1 (thiamine) and vitamin B2, just 28 grams of it is packed with:

Just when you thought a food couldn’t get more super, chia seeds are also a non-GMO whole-grain, free of gluten, rich in antioxidants and usually grown organically. Not bad for something that could get stuck in your teeth.

Thought for Food: Chia is the ancient Mayan word for “Strength”

BACK TO THE BASICS OF BREAD: SCHOON SOURDOUGH

Not all bread is created equal:  Every Schoon loaf is hand-shaped & baked the traditional way

After years of bad press, bread is baking a comeback. According to their website, “Manufactory (derived from ‘manual factory’) is a term coined by the great Parisian baker, Lionel Poilâne, when he expanded his small, woodfired oven bakery into a larger artisan production space. The SCHOON Manufactory at The Bird Precinct in Stellenbosch includes a small café, experimental kitchen, bakery and patisserie.”

That’s where the team brainstorms and creates, and where they’re re-inspiring the sourdough loaf. An ancient form of grain fermentation, this forgotten favourite is recently on the rise. SCHOON makes it so well, it’s made its way onto our menu. Sustainably farmed, stone-milled and made the traditional way using locally sourced grains and wheat, there’s love baked into every hand-shaped loaf.

Taste the upper crust of craftsmanship with a SCHOON sourdough sandwich or try crunchy croutons on a salad – it’s the bread we can’t stop coming back for.

Bread Winner: SCHOON opens a brand new location this October, so pencil it in because their croissants are life-changing.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO: LOW CARB SALAD POT

Low carb, high health: One pot’s the perfect portion

We could actually go on forever about the benefits, but aren’t those four enough? Packed with freshness, the low carb pot portion is small but satisfying, so if you’re counting calories, you and this salad were made for each other.

Going Green: We’re eating 900% more broccoli than we did in 1999.

Leonardo and the Leaves: da Vinci was the first artist to depict salad in his paintings.

GETTING BACK TO THE BASICS OF BREAD

SLOW MEETS DOUGH with Schoon Bread

Schoon Video from Fritz Schoon on Vimeo.

All of this made SCHOON the obvious choice when we went looking for a better bread to use in Kauai kitchens. After a lot of chewing (and chewing it over) we finally settled on their sourdough. Sustainably farmed, stone-milled and made the traditional way using locally sourced grains and wheat, there’s love baked into every hand-shaped loaf.

Goes With Your Gut

This is going to get a little scientific, but here’s what makes sourdough the superior slice for sensitive stomachs:

  • It’s easier to digest. Research says this could be because of its prebiotic content and probiotic-like properties. Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria found in some foods and supplements.
  • It’s more nutritious. Although it’s often made from the same flour as other kinds of bread, the natural fermentation process improves sourdough’s nutrition profile.
  • It contains higher levels of folate and antioxidants than other breads.
  • It’s lower phytate levels helps the body absorb the nutrients in it more easily.
  • The slow fermentation method may also degrade gluten more than baker’s yeast.

Sourdough’s Little Secret: This crusty character may have a better effect on blood sugar and insulin levels than other types of bread, though the reason for this isn’t completely understood. Yet.

Come To The Crust

YAY! WE’VE GONE GLOBAL!

THE WORLD JUST GOT A LITTLE BITE FRESHER.

We’re always on a nutrition mission.

From day one we’ve been finding new ways to bring more people more choices for easier health and wellness. 23 years later, and with 150 stores in South Africa (and three across Namibia and Botswana) we thought it might be time to take the Kauai goodness way out of town.

So, packed with a plucky plan to plant Kauai freshness wherever good food fans needed it most, we went looking for the best partners in the best places. The bad news? We all need new passports and those queues are the worst. The good news: we’ve picked up a bit of Thai and Dutch…

Say Sawadee!

We love Thailand for so many reasons, so bringing Kauai to Bangkok was a no-brainer.

All of our Thailand stores (1 for now, 3 more coming soon) are inside Virgin Active gyms, with the launch store smack dab in the trendy new Whizdom101 district. Most of our menu will stay the same, but we’ve made room for local Thai flavours like soba noodle salads, iced tea and coffee drinks – yum!

Don’t Get Tongue Thai’d! Order Like A Local With These Handy Translations:

  • smoothie น้ำผลไม้ปั่น nám pŏn-lá-máai bpàn
  • water น้ำ nám
  • iced tea ชาเย็น chaa yen
  • coffee กาแฟ gaa fae
  • iced coffee กาแฟเย็น gaa-fae yen

Next Stop – The Netherlands!

Europe’s got a growing crush on clean eating. It also has lots of very busy people, especially at Utrecht Centraal. With sixteen platform tracks, over 1 000 departures and almost 200 000 passengers per day, it’s the Netherlands’ busiest railway station.

With so many people on the move and hungry for nutritious nourishment, we naturally had to freshen things up with a Kauai! 70% of the menu will stay the same, but we’ve tweaked the rest to the tastes of the Dutch, like adding more on-the-go items (everyone here’s got a train to catch) and using homegrown ingredients, like Boerenkaas.
