Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of nutrients for a healthy microbiota. As they are high in fibre, the body needs bacteria to break the fibre down which helps stimulate the growth of bacteria in your gut. Sources of fibre that is good for your gut: beans, legumes, broccoli, chickpeas, lentils & whole grains. 



Sourdough is made by fermenting the dough, it is a lot more digestible than regular bread and it releases energy a lot slower. Almonds are known to have good probiotic properties. They are high in fibre & loaded with fatty acids & polyphenols which is the ultimate treat for your gut. Feeling a little peckish during the day or need a good pick me up snack, grab a handful of almonds. We’re in this together

Hi Kauai fam,

We will be closing our stores during lockdown. Our Virgin Active stores closed yesterday, and our retail stores will close at end of day today. We have spent the last few days trying to find creative ways to keep serving you our healthy, immune-boosting food & drinks, but it has become clear that the right and responsible thing to do is to close our doors for now, along with the rest of South Africa. We stand with SA and with President Cyril Ramaphosa in supporting the national shutdown, as we believe that it will help halt the spread of COVID-19, which will keep our staff, customers and country safe.

Thank-you to our amazing Kauai staff who have worked hard to help SA eat healthy over the past weeks. We are working with them to ensure that they stay safe and have access to funding during the lockdown.

We will not be offering delivery through UberEats & Mr D Food during this time – but you can still find Kauai’s protein bars, protein powders & sparkling sodas in selected Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar and FreshStop at Caltex stores. Our Pick n Pay Powered by Kauai make-at-home smoothies and ready-to-eat healthy frozen meals are also available at selected Pick n Pay stores and are a convenient way to continue eating healthy nutritious food during the lockdown.

Put them together in delicious ways, and we’ve got a menu (and you, a lunch order) as FRESH as it gets. Often this means letting the seasons and seasonal produce guide us when we decide what to put on our menu. Twice a year (summer and winter), we launch seasonal menus that not only brings the winter feels but tons of nutrients to keep you going & super healthy during the colder days.

This comes with a lot of hard work from our NPD & Innovation team. For about 6 months, they are tasting and testing the next best ingredients and deciding if they’re good enough for the Kauai menu. After that they put their chefs hats on and start working their magic (It’s actual magic).

For the launch of our winter menu, we are preparing for colder days with new functional ingredients, exciting new flavours, warm dishes, super superfoods to give you that boost and a new addition to our coffee family.

We are serving up Mexican inspired dishes loaded with antioxidants (vitamin K,C & E), healthy fats (omega 3 fatty acids) & fibre. Some hearty goodness is just what everyone needs on a chilly day, so be sure to try out our nutrient-packed warm veg stews & flavourful dishes guaranteed to keep you warm & your immune system strong.

Super Superfoods: Hemp Seeds


These tiny seeds come from the high-growing varieties of the Cannabis plant, but don’t be alarmed, they don’t contain the active THC compound found in marijuana! They are rich in nutrients , they’re versatile & one of many great SUPERFOODS too.


  • Packed with protein that has a wide range of amino acids – aids feelings of satiety and provides the building blocks for muscles. Because they contain all the amino acids, they are a great source of protein for vegans and vegetarians.
  • Loaded with Magnesium which is linked to a positive effect on migraines, blood pressure, osteoporosis and PMS.

Feeding your body certain foods may help keep your immune system strong. If you’re looking for ways to prevent winter colds and the flu, your first step should be a visit to your local grocery store. Plan your meals to include these 15 powerful immune system boosters.

Citrus fruit
Citrus fruits (like oranges and lemons) are paced with vitamin C, the vitamin we all turn to when we’ve caught a cold. That’s because it helps build up your immune system. Vitamin C is thought to increase the production of white blood cells. These are key to fighting infections. Because your body doesn’t produce or store it, you need daily vitamin C for continued health. Almost all citrus fruits are high in vitamin C and we’ve got  A LOT of smoothies and shots to choose from.

There’s also some orange in the Plant Power salad and wrap for some sneaky Vitamin C!

Red bell peppers

If you think citrus fruits have the most vitamin C of any fruit or vegetable, think again. Red peppers contain twice as much vitamin C as citrus fruits. Get your peppers in the Salsa Quesadilla and Cajun Chicken salad and wrap.


Broccoli is supercharged with vitamins and minerals. Packed with vitamins A, C, and E, X, Y, K, L, M, (kidding, let’s only say A, C, E for now) as well as many other antioxidants and fiber, broccoli is one of the healthiest vegetables you can put in your tummy. Thai Crunch please and thank you.

Spinach is cool

Spinach made the list not just because it’s rich in vitamin C. It’s also packed with numerous antioxidants! Similar to broccoli, spinach is healthiest when it’s cooked as little as possible so that it retains its nutrients hence the smoothies and juices, people. All the, all the, ALL THE GREENS & The Parmesan Greens!

YOLO, eat your yogurt

Yogurt has cultures that may stimulate your immune system to help fight diseases. Try to get eat plain yogurts rather than the kinds that are preflavored and loaded with sugar. You can sweeten plain yogurt yourself with healthy fruits and a drizzle of honey instead ie. the Breakfast Bowl and Tropical Yogurt Pot. Yogurt can also be a great source of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system and is thought to boost our body’s natural defenses against diseases.

All the Almonds please

When it comes to preventing and fighting off colds, vitamin E tends to take a backseat to vitamin C. However, vitamin E is key to a healthy immune system. It’s a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it requires the presence of fat to be absorbed properly. Nuts, such as almonds, are packed with the vitamin and also have healthy fats. A half-cup serving, which is about 46 whole, shelled almonds, provides nearly 100 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin E.

Chicken is high in vitamin B-6. About 3 ounces of lean chicken meat contains 40 to 50 percent of your daily recommended amount of B-6.Vitamin B-6 is an important player in many of the chemical reactions that happen in the body. It’s also vital to the formation of new and healthy red blood cell.

Sunflower seeds & Turmeric

You may know turmeric as a key ingredient in many curries. But this bright yellow, bitter spice has also been used for years as an anti-inflammatory.

Sunflower seeds are full of nutrients, including magnesium, and vitamin B-6. They’re also incredibly high in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant.Vitamin E is important in regulating and maintaining immune system function. Other foods with high amounts of vitamin E include avocados (Avo toast foreva) and dark leafy greens (Juice, juice, juice).  Find turmeric and our curried sunflower seeds in the Butta Chicken Bowl and the sunflower seeds in our Plant Power salad and wrap.

More ways to prevent the flu

Variety is the key to proper nutrition. Eating just one of these foods won’t be enough to help fight off the flu, even if you eat it constantly. Free range farms provide facilities where the chickens are able to live as naturally as possible and are able to go outside when they want throughout their laying cycle. The chickens have access to scratching areas, perches, litter and nests.

Why free range is better!

Free range chickens are known for producing eggs that are more nutrient dense than those from caged chickens. Chickens that are free to roam around, have a more versatile selection of vitamins and minerals like Vitamins B, D, A, Potassium, and Sodium. Due to the better standard of living and better quality diets, the taste of free range chicken is generally better as their quality of life and diet is a lot higher.

Prioritizing health & safety in response to COVID-19

In light of the recent news that COVID-19 has arrived in SA, we wanted to share what we are doing to prioritize the health and wellbeing of our Kauai family (customers & staff):

· We are upholding the strict hygiene protocols in our stores – all staff preparing food and drinks wear gloves at all times, and staff sanitise their hands every 30 minutes; all surfaces where food and drinks are prepared are also sanitised every 30 minutes.

· We will be introducing bottles of hand sanitiser at our Kauai counters over the coming weeks. We encourage customers to sanitise their hands if they are handling cash, and before they eat.

· As a temporary measure, we are pausing the use of reusable cups in our stores. We will continue to honour the R1 discount for anyone who brings in a reusable cup (although we won’t make drinks in the cups), and will continue to run our current reusable cup promotion (buy a reusable cup and get 3 free smoothies / coffees; the free smoothies / coffees will be served in take-away or eat-in cups). Although we are currently focused on the health of our customers and staff, we are also committed to the health of our planet, and will review this on a weekly basis; we hope to reinstate the use of reusable cups as soon as possible. In the meantime, we will continue to use our smoothie cups made from 80% recycled plastic, and encourage our customers to recycle them where possible.

Health and well-being are at the heart of who we are as Kauai, and we remain committed to keeping our Kauai family safe and healthy during this challenging situation.


Here’s what you can do to take care of your health and protect others…

Wash your hands frequently.

Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Why? Your constantly touching many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, your hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue straight away.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, go see your doctor.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

We try our best to be as sustainable as possible when it comes to sourcing, preparing and serving better choices to you guys. Here’s what we’re doing (and will keep doing) to care for the planet…

Low Food Waste

By reducing our food wastage in stores we are also reducing our carbon footprint. Discarded food ends up in landfills and through decomposition produces large amounts of powerful greenhouse gasses. Too much greenhouse gasses can contribute to global warming and climate change. We ensure that we keep our food wastage to a minimum and our stores have an average food wastage of less than 1%. 

Trying to do the same? The Pick n Pay powered by Kauai range  is perfectly portioned to prevent any food wastage and to allow for every last bit to be enjoyed. 

Low Electricity Use

We use induction hobs when prepping your meals.  This is a more energy efficient way of cooking in comparison to traditional gas or electric hobs. The heat is in direct contact with the food which means less electricity needed to prepare meals.


All of our take away packaging including hot drink cups, straws, bowls and cardboard boxes have been designed to be 100% recyclable. Our takeaway smoothie cups are made from 80% recycled plastics. It’s your turn to contribute to a healthier planet, dispose of your take away packaging responsibly into recycling bins. 

We understand that it can get difficult trying to reduce your plastic consumption but we have made it a lot easier for you, the Kauai reusable smoothie and coffee cup helps you to reduce your plastic use and get R1 off* your smoothie or coffee. We know that straws play a major role in plastic waste, at Kauai we only make use of biodegradable and paper straws in our stores and we don’t serve our drinks with a straw. If you prefer using one, you can find one at the counter along with the coffee and smoothie cup lids.

We go the extra mile so our ingredients won’t have to. You can’t go wrong with farmers who do the right thing, so we pick our partners for sustainability, source ethically and go to great lengths to support local producers. The food, the whole whole food and nothing but the food. All our fruit and veg is delivered whole, so every meal we make gets a farm-fresh start. Even our dressings are made from scratch.

Peanut Butter Berry Smoothie Bowl

Double Choc Chip Berry Protein Pancakes by The Honest Grazer

Loved by all, enjoyed at any time of the day and drizzled with almost anything. Pancakes are the best kind of cure, breakfast, lunch, dinner & dessert, we don’t care what anyone else says #PancakesForTheWin. The Honest Grazer couldn’t agree more. Her delicious Double Choc Chip Berry Protein Pancake stack is dense, full of nutritious fiber (tummy filler) and topped with antioxidants and deliciousness. 

Serves 2-3
Makes approx. 6-8 pancakes

1 cup Chocolate Oats
2 tbsp Kauai Cocoa Plant Protein Powder
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
¼ tsp sea salt
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1.5-2 cups almond milk
1 tsp vanilla essence
1/2 slab Chocolate bar (coarsely chopped)

Nut butter (Try our Kauai Nut Butters! We’re nutty about them)
Coconut cream
Cacao nibs
Goji berries

Mix the oats, protein powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt and blitz in a blender until it reaches a course sandy texture. Add in the liquids and blend again. The mixture should resemble a runny muffin batter. Heat coconut oil in a pancake pan over a medium heat and scoop two tablespoons of batter into the pan. Spread it a bit until it forms a circle and then sprinkle over the chopped goji berry chocolate. Let it cook until the sides start to harden and then flip to cook through on the other side. Repeat until the batter is finished.

Layer 1: Pancake
Layer 2: Nut butter (or try it with chocolate)
Layer 3: Crushed raspberries
Repeat with 3-4 pancakes and then top off with coconut cream, goji berries, cacao nibs and more raspberries.

Here are 4 extremely easy things you can do to help protect the bees:

Bees are thirsty. Put a small basin of fresh water outside your home.

Bees work really hard to produce honey and it is our duty to ensure that they are well looked after. Place a small basin of fresh clean water outside your home to allow bees to rest and drink water – they’ll appreciate it. With all the hard work in the sun, bees get thirsty and need water to help them throughout the day.

Make your garden a bee-friendly space

If you’re a plant-parent, add non-hybrid, fruit, vegetable or herb plants to your garden as this is another way to attract bees and to provide them with a source of nourishment.

Don’t fear bees, they do not want to harm you. 

As much as we fear bees, they fear us too. Their only job is to forage pollen and nectar from flowers and to bring it back to the hive to bring food for themselves and the beehive. To ensure that they do not sting you in the process of it all always stay still and calm when they are near or on you, this way, they’ll be absolutely harmless.

Buy local, raw honey

The collaboration was a great fit for both Kauai and G Portrait Project (GPP). We brought some bubbles to the streets of Cape Town with our guilt-free sparkling sodas. Not only were the beautiful streets captured but our beautifully designed and colourful cans were featured too, we don’t know what could make these pictures any better. 

Our sparkling sodas are free from preservatives, sugars and sweeteners. All three variants are flavoured with not-too-sweet, fruity touches balanced with crisp bubbles. Our thirst-quenching sparkling sodas comes in three great flavours, litchi, mango passion and tangerine.


The Kauai Fresh truck made another appearance on a hot Sunday morning where we combined mankind’s favourite thing-free stuff with our refreshing smoothies. Our team gave hikers, trailers,cyclists, bikers and dog walkers a refreshing smoothie to end off what seemed to be a good Sunday morning sweat session. Many passersby couldn’t believe that we were handing out free smoothies. However, our sole purpose was to give them a taste of summer, a refreshing drink to end off a great morning in mother nature. We trailed to different locations to make sure that the goodness was spread all over. If you’ve missed us, don’t shed a tear, we will be making another appearance soon, we’ve got all summer long.
